Life may not be the same after divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 26, 2019 | Divorce

Sometimes, when people think of a “fair” divorce agreement, what they really mean is that they want the exact same life after the divorce that they had before it. They want the same home, the same standard of living, the same financial freedom. They think that the goal is to set things up with property division, spousal support and child support so that it is as if they never got divorced at all.

Here’s the stark reality: That’s probably not going to happen.

What you must remember is that divorce comes with some relatively simple math. You need to multiply your bills by two. You then need to divide your assets in half. After that, divide your income in half.

Doing this makes it clear that, no matter how you split up those assets or what type of support orders you use, both of you are not going to have the same lifestyle after the divorce. Many people have to sell their large family homes and downsize, for instance, because they need homes they can each afford on one income. They also need to be able to pay for maintenance and upkeep, utilities, taxes and much more.

That doesn’t mean you can’t have a good life. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seek a fair resolution. But it’s also important to have the proper perspective so that you know what life is going to look like and what you should expect.

Along the way, make sure you take the time to really dig into all of your legal options and your rights.
